My nuclear family may be very small but I have an extended family that's very tight and close-knit. I guess you could say that goes for most Filipino families including ones living abroad. I remember when I was little, back in the 80s, and we get a high amount of long distance calls from loved ones sending us their greetings. There were also snail mails and cards sent with pictures and if we're lucky, maybe even a dollar or $20!

Fast forward to the present, some almost 30 years later since those times we had to walk to the telephone company and get into a booth to make a long distance phone call, getting in touch with people you love and family who are away has become just a click or two. Kids these days will never understand having to speak with a telephone operator to ring another person's phone. With today's technology, anyone can get in touch with almost anyone instantaneously!

Such things we take for granted, but not too long ago we had a moment of truth slapped to our faces when Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) struck our city last year. Phone lines died when the storm came in full force and our connection to the outside world, to the people who mattered to us, were succinctly cut. For days the only means to communicate was having to catch an elusive signal with very limited power supply just to get help and inform loved ones of our current status. Que horror. I never want to live through that again!

Since I work online, when I couldn't connect to the Internet, I was frantic! Our old DSL connection took months to get repaired so when PLDT finally came to town, of course, my in-laws who run a leading travel company in Ormoc signed up for it. I was able to resume work and get on with life. After all, tragedies occur and it's very important to keep on living. We got the 10 mbps package because there was a major need to book flights and a reliable connection was absolutely necessary. Because it was also the season of sharing and giving, we lent internet connection via WiFi to people who needed to go online to contact their worried friends and family. Using Skype or Facetime was a dream with the fast PLDT connection and we were even able to watch TV shows we missed post-Yolanda. Concerned people from all over were relieved to see updates we posted on our social media sites about how we coped up and survived the catastrophe. We were able to help ourselves and help other people at the same time. Apparently, having a stronger connection to the Internet gives you stronger family relations.

One of the things I learned then is that family will always be there for you. I was able to reach out to cousins and relatives who I hardly hear from, but because they were genuinely concerned about our well-being after the typhoon, we were able to connect and re-connect through Facebook chat and iMessages. Blood is definitely thicker than water so to speak.

Indeed it is quite the honor to be given this tribute because the award-giving body, the Araw Awards, is dedicated to values in advertising and marketing communications. By promoting positive values and basic ideals of the rich Filipino cultural heritage like the family unit and national pride, as well as respect for elders, relationship with God, and so on. It's nice knowing that PLDT reflects this kind of social responsibility in their multi-sector industry. Anyway, the second month of 2014 is here and I've lived almost 3 decades of my life already but yet there are still so many FIRSTS to experience. In this most recent case, my FIRST Android phone is here! I had declared that one of my NY resolutions was to be more open to new things. New products. New brands. New ideas.

So this is actually my FIRST raffle win for 2014! (More wins this year please?!) Because I needed to have my prize shipped to me I found out that LBC, Hari Ng Padala, actually accepts prepaid packages. Oi! That's a first! I mean, I knew about freight collect courier services but those are for cargo mostly; however, LBC Express does allow you to pay for packages when you need someone to send you something and you're shouldering the shipping fee. So it's like this:

• First, you ship them an empty transpack. I included in a bubble wrap since they were going to ship me a mobile phone.
• Then you pay for the two packages. (In my case I paid around Php460)

So that's it! All the other end has to do it ship back my prize inside the empty transpack I sent him and he doesn't need to pay anything. Just drop it off at an LBC branch. This sure as heck is easier than finding a representative to claim a prize! This was actually suggested by Mark Clutario when I told him my situation of being geographically-challenged. Daghan salamat, Mark!

So anyways, I got my prize and it was an O+ 8.52 Anroid phone that I won from Yugatech's 25 Days of Christmas Giveaway. I'm not going to write a technical review because there are many dedicated sites on the web for that, so I instead I'll show you how an Apple fangirl learns Android and well, how I turned my Android phone into an Apple wannabe.



Moving on with my review of this mobile phone unit...

The O+ 8.52 Android phone comes with the usual bells and whistles of your typical smartphone. It utilizes a 1,450 mAh battery pack though it runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS with its 1 GHz Dual Core MediaTek MTK6577 processor with a 4-inch 480 x 800 pixels IPS LCD. The RAM is just 512 MB but I don't play games on my phones so that's not an issue for me. The camera has 5 megapixels but we all know quality is all about the sensor. For me, it's very slow and the quality, nevermind. I do love that it's got the Dual SIM Dual Standby capability, connects to WiFi as well as has Bluetooth and 3G connectivity options. The Air Shuffle is actually the biggest thing about O+ phones (as advertised) but I can't be bothered with that either. It can only be used on apps such as the built-in photo gallery and you can't really apply it to 3rd party apps. Toinks!



Oh, before I forget... the charger that came with the USB cable was busted in less than 24 hours. Eeek! On the second day that I had the phone, it wouldn't charge! I hadn't even rooted it yet so I figured it's not bricked and I ought to use another charger with the supplied USB cable. Voila! It worked... So the charger that came with it is probably a lemon. Tsk!

When I got this phone (same holds true for any phone I get my hands on), I immediately try to change it's theme. What can I say? I like to be different and I'm all for customization. This is easily accomplished via Google's PlayStore. I found a nice iPhone Launcher Theme that matched the Pink Leaves Go Locker Theme and GO SMS Theme WP8Pink.

So that was easy. Now my Android phone looks like an iPhone! I'm not too crazy about widgets because basically those things drain your battery faster from what I gathered so I'm perfectly fine without installing any of those. My O+ 8.52 still was functioning fast in spite of the themes so I'm happy. It's not as fast as I want it to be though. I did install a couple of apps that are meant to speed up your phone by deleting caches and releasing memory, etc.

The one other thing I always want to tinker with and change in all my mobile phones is the FONT. I love my handwritten and fancy fonts. But then I discovered I had to ROOT this damn phone before I could download and use all these free fonts from the PlayStore. Ayayay! It took me an entire morning just to get it done. I had no idea what's inside an Android OS but thank goodness for forums and techs sharing their knowledge. So let me show you a step-by-step tutorial courtesy of ProZoLD*cK from PHCORNER.net.

You'll need the following: (I suggest you download them all before proceeding to the steps on how to root below.)

1. MT6577 USB VCOM drivers (Download HERE.)
2. MTK Droid and Root Tools (Download HERE.)
3. SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1244.0.sn85 for Android 4.1 jellybeans (Download HERE.)
4. Moborobo installer (Download HERE.)

Now follow the instructions below on how to ROOT your Android mobile phone. I'll make it as clear as I can.

IMPORTANT: Install the Moborobo installer on your computer (first so that your phone can be detected by your computer. Close the program after installation, select recommend and OK if that comes up on screen.


Here are the steps for rooting:

1. Turn off your phone and connect it to your computer. Extract the MT6577 USB VCOM drivers and install it on your computer. Make sure to finish installing it before proceeding to the next step so the phone gets detected by all the other tools we will be using subsequently.



2. Remove phone from your computer. Turn on your phone and enable USB debugging. Go to Settings > Developer Option > enable USB debugging then connect your phone to the computer. Now extract MtkDroidTools. Run MTKdroidTools.exe. Wait for the computer to detect your O+ 8.52 Android phone.

3. On the MTKdroidTools, click Blocks Map , then CREATE SCATTER FILE. Save the TXT file to your Desktop to easily locate it later. Then click RETURN.


4. Run Flash_tool.exe which is located in the SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1244.0.sn85 file you downloaded. Click Scatter-loading then locate the TXT file we just created that should be on your Desktop. Then on tabs located on the program where it says Download | Read Back | Memory test, just click the Read Back tab.



5. On the Read Back tab, click Add, double click the one below Read Flag, then save your output to your DESKTOP with the filename ROM_0.


6. When the Read Back block start address comes on, click HEX then enter the value 0x27ee8000 for Length.

7. Now you can turn off your phone and disconnect the USB connector from your computer. At this time, on your Flash_tool you'll see options for Add | Remove | Read Back. Now just click on Read Back before connecting your phone to the computer once again. This is so the computer recognizes the phone even though it's turned off. After re-connecting your phone, just wait for it to finish uploading to your phone. Depending on your computer speed/power, it will take quite a while. Don't worry about it.



8. When that's done, you can remove your phone from your computer. Then turn it ON before connecting it back again to your computer. Then let's go back to the MtkDroidTools, and this time click on the Root, Backup, Recovery tab. Then click To process file ROM_ from FlashTool, and look for the ROM we made during step 7. That's the one presumably saved on your Desktop. Wait for it to say "task is complete", then just click OK if anything pop ups on screen. This may take some time and when it's finished, just disconnect your phone from the computer and turn it off.


9. Now back to the Flash_tool, click on Scatter-loading then in your MtkDroidTools folder, you'll find a backups folder containing a file  then yung backup na folder then may folder na O+ 8.52 forFlashtool etc, open it and look for the file: MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc.txt, click OK. Uncheck all boxes except for RECOVERY, double click this and inside your backups folder, click the O+-8.52-Android_130201__recovery_130610-180612 or a similar file to this. Now back to Flash_tools, you'll find options such as Format | Firmware | Download, and just click the Download button before you connect your phone to the computer while it is turned off. After the process is complete, remove your phone.


Note: If you're wondering where the heck is the backups folder, it should be inside your MtkDroidTools folder.


10. The next step is to boot your phone into recovery mode and you can do this by holding volume up + power button.



After the recovery mode is displayed on screen, you can connect the phone to the computer once more. Run MtkDroidTools to root the phone. At the Backup, Root, Recovery tab, you'll notice the options BACKUP, SUPERUSER, BUILD PROP, and DELETE CHINA are no longer greyed out so that means YOU DID IT!!! Go ahead and click Superuser so to install apps necessary to be rooted. Wait for until it displays "task is complete".


It is recommended to also click BACKUP so that you will have a copy of your stock ROM for your Android phone just in case it gets bricked in the future. ;)

You can check your Root and Superuser status via the Root Checker Pro app. Just install it to your phone. Here's a screenshot of mine with my current font, too:

So why ROOT your phone? For me, I just needed the fonts installed. But other people choose to do so because rooting allows you to run special applications that requires you to be "Superuser". Certain apps need access to the "root" system of your device. Once rooted, it also allow you to tether a computer to your Android phone so that the computer can access the Internet using the phone's data connection. And then there's a program that can allow your Android mobile phone to be used as a WiFi Hotspot without having to pay your provider for the feature, though I haven't really tried this and don't intend to because then I'd kill my battery faster. So no thanks. Another huge advantage of being rooted is the option to free up your phone's memory. It goes without saying you can move your installed apps to your memory card. And the topmost reason why people want to root their phones is the ability to install Custom ROMs. Gosh! I suddenly remember my Windows mobile HTC days like 10 years ago when it was all about customizing your ROMs. I feel so old now. LOL! Remember Airfagev?

Of course, there are disadvantages and risks involved when you root your phone. First of all, rooting will void your phone's warranty. No surprise there. And secondly, rooting involves the risk of "bricking" your phone, meaning you might kill it in the process especially if you don't do it right. So be careful and follow instructions! Some people claim that after rooting, their phones become slower in performance despite the fact that it's supposed to speed up your phone and also some phones can get viruses.

So rooting may not be for everybody. "ROOT" at your own risk! ^_^ But if you like livin' on the edge, I say, why not chocnut? :D

Overall, as a secondary phone, I'm satisfied with the O+ 8.52 Android phone. Though it can't replace as my primary phone. There are bigger and faster models from O+ USA that you're better off it if you're here because you're looking into buying this particular model. I say skip this one and get a newer/upgraded model. However, I cannot sway you if this 5K+ phone meets your budget requirements, but still I recommend to splurge 1 or 2K more and get a better model. But as a backup phone, yes, it will definitely do.

Back in October, way before the supertyphoon Haiyan (Yolanda) ruined my Christmas plans, I was in the market for an iPhone 5S. I actually applied for a new Globe postpaid subscription (though recently changed my mind about getting one from SMART instead). However, this Christmas wish will probably be put on hold until we get to recover from the mess that Haiyan (Yolanda) made.

Looking at the images and charts, it's pretty obvious that Android OS and Samsung is leading the market. I, for one, will not be getting an Android device and even one from Samsung. Why? 'Coz you know I'm an Apple fan girl. LOL. No really, I am comfortable with iOS and I got tons of paid apps that I don't think I can live without.

Apparently I haven't been buying gadgets or reviewing any in the recent months. I can't even remember my last consumer electronics splurge; though if my memory serves me correctly it's been a year since I bought my Panasonic Lumix LX7. That's life, I guess. Change of priorities. Then I just started to become a beauty blogger, too.

Recently though I was tasked to make purchases for my FIL and MIL because they needed mobile computers. Of course, they're not power users so I recommended some ultrabooks because I've read so many great reviews about it. We ended up buying an ASUS Vivobook X202 and Lenovo S210. These two run on Windows 8 and both come with touch screen displays. OMGWTFBBQ. I am so behind, technologically-speaking.

My first impressions? Apparently, I'm very impressed! First and foremost, the startup and shutdown time. I have issues with computers booting for 48 years and a lifetime to turn it off. With these ultrabooks, it feels like turning on/off a tablet!

Both ultrabooks have the same specs except for the Lenovo a bit clocked higher at 1.60 GHz compared to Asus with just 1.50 GHz. The difference is not earth-shattering as their Windows Experience Index ratings are as follows: Lenovo at 4.5 and Asus at 4.3.


Personally, I type a lot so I prefer the Asus one... and it's all because of the brushed aluminum chassis. It makes typing feel so much better and more solid with every keyboard click. And I can't help but agree that for a budget-priced laptop, the Asus VivoBook X202 looks like a million bucks! Think Macbook Air from Apple minus the backlit keyboard. For me, the Lenovo feels more like a netbook because of the white matte plastic case and its touchpad is not as responsive as the one in Asus.


They both came with Windows 8 64-bit and installing 64-bit programs like Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom and MS Office is a breeze. I thought I was going to experience hiccups with the dual core CPUs since I've been accustomed to using an i7 for 2 years now, but it was not the case. Photoshop and Lightroom performed well and the programs opened and closed quickly! Perfect when you're in a rush. Now I'm thinking, this is the best blogger's budget laptop! With a 4gb of RAM, HDMI port (and even has VGA!), USB 2 and 3, and an SD card reader, it's got everything I need for creative writing! I think I might score one myself as I'm eyeing the red version of the 14-inch Asus Vivobook S400 ultrabook, which comes in either an i5 or a cheaper i3 processor. It's about time I get myself a mobile computer. Ahem. I've been working on a desktop for 2 years now. ;) Then again, I'll need to save up for one or maybe if Lady Luck is on my side, I might just win an ultrabook and if someone should sponsor me one (even just a loaner unit), I'm all ears and just an email away. Tee hee!

So how much are these babies? Well, I'm happy to say that the prices for both are very budget-friendly. The Lenovo was priced at PHP 19,999.00 and the Asus Vivobook X202 was PHP 20,995.00. Incredible, isn't it? I bought my mom's Asus EEE PC back in 2009 for freaking PHP 23,995!!!

Now, I have another confession to make. I have never used Windows 8 until now and I think it's really neat! Na uwat jud ko! The touchscreen on these ultrabooks/laptops make browsing so good! I mean, I so prefer using the fingers on the touchscreen over using the touchpad or a mouse. Everything is fluid like in iOS, which was pretty surprising to me, given my not so very pleasant experience with Windows that prompted me to switch to Mac!

The Lenovo or the Asus ultrabook is like an iPad but with keyboards!!! IKR. I'm so late and I need to be updated with technology now. I used to be such a gadget girl and a geek, but then life happened. LOL! So yeah, maybe now it's another time for a cool change? ^_^

So between the two, obviously the ASUS gets my thumbs up!

Not on GetGlue? Well, you're missing out on the fun! I am a huge fan of it and today, I just got my stickers! How to get your real GetGlue stickers is very easy. I'll show you how in a minute. But first, let me just say that I've been using GetGlue since 2011 and the first time I requested a set of stickers back then, I DIDN'T GET ANY!!! Hmmpf. But then I thought I'd try to request once more since I have unlocked these whole lot of stickers now...

I actually thought of deleting my GetGlue app back in 2012 when they stopped supporting check-ins to Books, just because I had lots of check-ins to those. But then I still watch a lot of movies and follow TV shows and it's a great place to interact with fans and people who have stuff to say. I rant when I hate a character or just whine about why a show has been canceled. Boooo! So yeah, I also tend to avoid checking in before I watch something because THIS IS SPOILER HEAVEN... OR HELL!!! LOL. So I check-in AFTER I watch something. ^_^

As of writing this, I have 625 check-ins and 109 followers. Hey, add me up, will ya? CLICK HERE!!! Noodle Boy was pretty impressed when my stickers arrived today because he actually forgot he even had a GetGlue account! Upon logging back in, we were laughing at his poor 53 check-ins only. ROFLOL. So anyways, here's how to get real copies of your GETGLUE stickers. I used my desktop computer in doing so and not on a mobile device.

Login to your account. I personally just login using my Facebook account.

Check your GetGlue stickers and pick 20 of the ones you like.

GetGlue ships only 20 stickers at a time. So my first set is here and now I am requesting for another batch. Yey! I have 69 stickers currently so I think it might take a while to get them all because you can only request once per month.

With a torrent of smartphones raining down on consumers this wet season, let's not ignore the fact that we have a local brand that is actually at par with the big ones in the market today. What am I talking about? Well, as you know, I am a fan of local brands. I support them 100%. Our toiletries at home and my cosmetics consist of Human Heart Nature products. I'm also the type of girl who would rather buy a Bench bra, wear a pair of Freego jeans, and use a Penshoppe bag than be a trying hard social climber donning a Class A imitation of some popular imported brand. Truth be told, I can't easily afford luxurious designer labels but even if I could, maybe I still wouldn't. And what better way to help our economy than patronize our local goods, right? So yeah. You get the picture.

Even though I am such an Apple fangirl, aside from the iPhone (which I got for free with my postpaid line) I do own a couple of mobile phones that include some MyPhones. Well, if you ask me, you just can't beat that DUAL-SIM feature. I have a couple of other numbers that I use for business, in case you're wondering why I need something like that. Not for monkey business, mind you. So why choose MyPhone? Simply because it's a Philippine mobile phone brand! And who else should be buying these but us? I mean, a huge number of Koreans all use Samsung, so why can't Filipinos be loud and proud rocking their MyPhones, too? Well, I am!

My MyPhones for business and pleasure, the B12 and the B88+ Duo. Basically all you'll ever need for calls and texts!

It's nice that MyPhones now come in the color white. I also love the fact they last practically like forever. I've had these Pinoy phones for almost 2 years and still their performance hasn't disappointed me. Even the battery powers are still great. The B12 is a good music player alternative and the B88+ Duo is what I use for my SUN number because I use it mainly for the unlimited calls and as my emergency flashlight as it has that one touch/shortcut button right at the middle.

So what about smartphones or Android powered MyPhones? I recently went to our local MyPhone concept store to check out what they had to offer. What caught my attention are these two.

These two are the perfect alternative for the Samsung Galaxy Y and the Galaxy S3.

I really do love the map of the Philippines at the back of the cover. Nothing says PROUD TO BE PINOY more than the map of our beloved country! The MyPhone A818G is like the Pinoy version of Samsung's Galaxy Y and it's big brother, the MyPhone A919 looks a lot like the S3. Since our MyPhone store here doesn't accept credit cards, I think I'm better off buying it from an online store like LAZADA Philippines since they accept BDO cards and you can pay in installment for up to 2 years.


The MyPhone A919 also runs on Jellybean (the latest Android firmware version) so this local cellphone brand or Philippine smartphone will definitely run very smoothly. I think with the 5" screen, it'd be perfect for browsing the Internet and playing my favorite puzzle games, in addition to the ability to install Viber, which is a popular cross-platform messaging app that most online businesses use for communication. I also learned that the A919 has got information and contact numbers of fast food joints, banks, and police which really turns this thing into a true blue Pinoy Phone. For people living in the capital, you will definitely find the MMDA app useful.


Aside from the MyPhone A919, I'm also interested in getting the MyPhone A898. It's much cheaper since they slashed down the price (Read: IT'S ON SALE!!!) and the specs are pretty alright with me as there's not a mega huge difference with the A919. See specs comparison below:


Bottomline is whatever smartphone I'm gonna end up getting, it'll absolutely be a MyPhone. I'm just glad we have a concept store here in my city so that warranty and support won't be any problem even if I purchase it at LAZADA Philippines. Here's a special discount code you can use at the site.
