My fellow Paulinians |
It was a morning well-spent and I look forward to consulting with the group and maybe even in the future consider teaching part-time at St. Paul's School of Ormoc. After all, I owe my English skills to my alma mater and I will be forever grateful to my English adviser, Ms. Lumine Pitoy-Marginet, for all that she's taught and shared with us back then. Time to give back!

Our City Fiesta festivities this year may have been cut back due to damages suffered from Yolanda (Typhoon Haiyan) and the city is still recovering from it but, nevertheless, we continued to show resilience in line with this year's theme: "We prayed, We survived, One city, Moving on."
Thus, the 1st Lake Danao Festival was materialized. We have been waiting for this moment because as an Ormocanon, I feel proud that we have this beautiful lake that we can take our guests and visitors to. I mean, why not bring them here instead of other places? Shouldn't this be our #1 tourist spot when they come over? Unfortunately, politics and other factors have been playing tug of war for the longest time so projects for the lake have always been put aside (if not totally ignored), but now thanks to the private sector, headed by the Ormoc City Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Ormoc LGU and the DENR's Protected Area Management Board, the 1st Lake Danao Festival turned out a successful event.
Friends and visitors from different parts of the Philippines came to participate in the events, namely, the Half-Marathon, Mountain Bike Challenge, 6K Trail Run, Kayak Race, and Stand Up Paddle. There were more participants than anticipated actually but there could have been more if the event was advertised earlier. Some already registered to other races happening at nearby towns. But for a beginning event, the 1st Lake Danao Festival was already very good. And that didn't come from just me but many participants said it themselves.
Congratulations to the winners as well as all the finishers! It was a really cool sportsfest where sports enthusiasts as well as nature lovers came to celebrate the 1st Lake Danao Festival. Thank you everyone for joining us. We hope to see you all next year for a bigger and better 2nd Lake Danao Festival!
About Lake Danao:
Lake Danao is a guitar-shaped lake on the island of Leyte, Philippines in the province of Leyte.
The lake is covering an area of 148 hectares (370 acres). It is situated in the 2,193 hectares (5,420 acres) Lake Danao National Park, which also includes the Amandiwin mountain range. The lake is 18 kilometres (11 mi) northeast of Ormoc City, half an hour drive along the San Pablo - Tongonan and Milagro - Lake Danao roads.
It was originally named "Lake Imelda" and was declared a national park on June 2, 1972 by virtue of presidential memorandum issued by then President Ferdinand Marcos. Later it was renamed and declared as Lake Danao National Park on February 3, 1998 through Proclamation No. 1155 and is now protected by Republic Act No. 7586 otherwise known as the National Integrated Protected Area System (NIPAS) Act of 1992.[1] The lake supplies potable water to at least seven towns in Eastern Leyte including Tacloban City[2] as well as the source of irrigation for ricelands in some municipalities like Dagami, Burauen, Pastrana and Tabon-tabon.
At 650 metres (2,130 ft) above sea level, Lake Danao lies on an altitude similar to Tagaytay, making the area cooler than the average Philippine temperature.

If you remember back in 2010, Noodle Boy and I went on a trip to Lake Danao to take some pics and just marvel at nature. You can read that post HERE.
And now here's my VLOG about the event as well as interviews of the winners. Please watch it below or visit my YouTube channel at http://youtu.be/7tVhZp4NiYI.
This photo was taken 5 hours after I put on my #FOTD and my #makeup has not budged a bit! ✨ I used @shuuemuraph OB UV Under Base brightening mousse and @benefitbeautyph porefessional pro balm under my MAC studio fix powder plus foundation. Also used Benefit Hoola for contouring. My face is, however, dewy (not shiny) after 5 hrs from doing documentation for today's 1st Lake Danao Festival but I'm happy it held up until 8 hours later when I finally had to retouch my T-zone since we've been running all over the place covering the different sports events. Even my brows drawn and filled in with @anastasiabeverlyhills dipbrow in blonde stayed put for 12 hours! 👍👍 But more on that in a blog post soon!

As you may know, Leyte has been in the news, particularly Tacloban and Ormoc cities because of the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Yolanda. We have received some relief goods from our friends and relatives from different parts of the Philippines and even the world. Thank you so much for your generosity and kindness. I'm sad to say I am not impressed by how our LGU and even how the National Government has managed this disaster. But nevertheless, we are still hopeful that we can rise again from this turmoil. Really hoping that we can get our electricity back soon! NO ELECTRICITY = NO WORK = NO MONEY = NO FOOD = NOTHING.
In the meantime, please continue to include us in your prayers.

The Tugob Festival is a celebration of bounty here in my beloved hometown of Ormoc City. Actually, tugob is a Visayan word that means bountiful or abundant. We have an abundance of coconut, rice, pineapple, livestock, minerals, sugarcane, vegetable, fish, steam, and water. Come to think of it, our small provincial city basically has everything you need to live a good life (that is, if you value contentment). So anyway, we celebrate the Tugob Festival alongside our city's Charter Day celebration on the 20th of October every year.
Tugob is really a lively festival in thanksgiving for bountiful harvests and it is reverberated in the air of Ormoc City with contingents of the dance competition wearing colorful costumes, stomping their feet, slapping their thighs, raising their arms, and clapping their hands as everyone shouts in unison to celebrate the abundance of Ormoc City's natural resources.
Check out this video of the street dancers below from Mickey Lim and his team that showcases what the Tugob Festival is all about.
Tugob Festival Street Dance 2013 - HIGHLIGHTS from Kester Michael on Vimeo.
It really is fun to be in Ormoc around this time of the month with all sorts of activities going on. One of which was the vintage car show at the Ormoc City Plaza where collector's showcased their best treasures. Ormoc is known to be a city of old roots and families who can trace their lineage back to Spain. Old rich versus nouveau riche. Nonetheless, all are happy to be Ormocanons and proud of it!
Aside from all that fancy display, we also have the annual search for the Festival Queen or Miss Tugob from various schools. The candidates each represent the category of abundance as in the street dancing competition.
MISS TUGOB FESTIVAL QUEEN 2013 winners are as follows:
Miss Tugob 2013 - Ipil National High School
1st Runner Up - New Ormoc City National High School
2nd Runner Up - Systems Technology Institute
Also we just had the Terry Larrazabal Bike Festival attended by hundreds (if not thousands?) of bike pros and enthusiasts nationwide.
If you dig some extreme fun, there was also a The Kopiko Astig 3inOne Supercross 2013, a motocross show brought to you by Mr. JoJo Magan with the help of the Ormoc City LGU. Man & Machine Racing Promotions is the name of the organizer headed by Mr Jonas Adlawan Jr. For more info regarding M&M, visit them on their FB page.

So if you plan to visit Ormoc City or come home to this glorious city by the bay, make sure to book your flights and tours around this time of the month. When I was a kid, we used to have these "paradas" that take us to the pier/Ormoc City port whenever we go to Cebu and these are the ones who meet us also when we arrive from Cebu. This was during the 80s and the early 90s. Then progress came and we lost the old ways. But now it's time to relive those carriage days with our very own ORMOC Tartanilya Ride! Tour around the City Plaza and see why Ormoc has been awarded the cleanest and greenest city in Region 8 consecutively for years.
And now for more fun, my dear fellow Ormocanons, Fran-Con Viaje Internationale, our city's official Tartanilya operator is hosting a raffle contest for a week (ends on 10/19/2013) and the winner gets to go on a FREE Kalesa/Tartanilya Ride! So easy to join, just enter via rafflecopter below.

Good luck and watch out for Ormoc City's TUGOB Festival happening on our beloved city's Charter Day on October 20th!

With Buttercup Boutique recently re-opened, a lot of new arrivals will be coming in and they're coming in faaaast plus they are selling like hot cakes. Summer may be over but check out these prêt-à-porter as they are guaranteed to shake those blues brought by the rainy season's gloomy weather. I recommend spritzing some floral and fruity scents and re-live or reminisce the memories of your fun summers all over again.
You can order from BUTTERCUP BOUTIQUE or visit the store at Lopez Jaena Street, Ormoc City.

What was once a quiet, sleepy little town has become a bigger and bustling city. Although still nothing compared to the Queen City of the South or the Capital, here we are progressing slowly, steadily, and surely. I love the fact that we can still enjoy a laid back lifestyle at the same time enjoy the modern and trendy things just like what the more urbanized parts of the country are offering. Our tourism is getting there, too. I'll be writing about that very soon. :)
Nevertheless, this blog post I'm featuring is the newly (re)opened Buttercup Boutique and Novelty Shop owned by the beauty queen and my sister-in-law, Ishshah Franco-Kangleon. Ever since a little girl, she has always dreamed of owning a clothing store and yes, dreams do come true. She says it's not too late and it's absolutely worth the wait. Ishshah opened Buttercup back in the Summer of 2012 and since then has gradually expanded to selling not just women's clothes but children's garments, too.
Buttercup Boutique also sells bags, shoes, accessories, fragrances, and just about anything your kikay heart desires. Remember Buttercup generously sponsored a swimsuit for my summer-slash-birthday giveaway last April? WOOT! At the boutique, you can find both brand-new branded and pre-loved items imported from the US as well as collections from the owner's modest but definitely wearable and affordable original clothing line, Ishshah. The store only accepts cash at this time (no credit cards) but they do accept lay-aways as well. Through their Facebook page, you can also order items ONLINE from their albums then have those shipped to you (or picked up at the store) just like from any other online shop on the rise in cyberspace. In addition, you can follow the store account on Instagram to be updated on the latest.
The new store is now located at Lopez Jaena Street in Ormoc City, across DBP and beside Mancao Bookstore. Here are some of the pictures I took during the official opening last Wednesday, June 17, 2013.
Congratulations, Ish, for the successful opening of a BIGGER & BETTER Buttercup Boutique and Novelty Store!
P.S. I will be publishing fashion-related blog posts here at www.bastaigatsikat.com for Buttercup Boutique every month. So please do visit again to check them out! Til then! Thanks for dropping by!
