TUGOB, an Ormoc City Festival

Saturday, October 26, 2013

The Tugob Festival is a celebration of bounty here in my beloved hometown of Ormoc City. Actually, tugob is a Visayan word that means bountiful or abundant. We have an abundance of coconut, rice, pineapple, livestock, minerals, sugarcane, vegetable, fish, steam, and water. Come to think of it, our small provincial city basically has everything you need to live a good life (that is, if you value contentment). So anyway, we celebrate the Tugob Festival alongside our city's Charter Day celebration on the 20th of October every year.

Tugob is really a lively festival in thanksgiving for bountiful harvests and it is reverberated in the air of Ormoc City with contingents of the dance competition wearing colorful costumes, stomping their feet, slapping their thighs, raising their arms, and clapping their hands as everyone shouts in unison to celebrate the abundance of Ormoc City's natural resources.

Check out this video of the street dancers below from Mickey Lim and his team that showcases what the Tugob Festival is all about.

It really is fun to be in Ormoc around this time of the month with all sorts of activities going on. One of which was the vintage car show at the Ormoc City Plaza where collector's showcased their best treasures. Ormoc is known to be a city of old roots and families who can trace their lineage back to Spain. Old rich versus nouveau riche. Nonetheless, all are happy to be Ormocanons and proud of it!

Aside from all that fancy display, we also have the annual search for the Festival Queen or Miss Tugob from various schools. The candidates each represent the category of abundance as in the street dancing competition.
